Curtis Ousley Insurance ended with the perfect nickname! King Curtis was indeed the "king" of rock & roll saxophone. Their sound was big, rich, sweet and expression. One of the few that comes from knowing who you are when you hear it.
Born in 1934, he was just a young teenager and the jump blues and rhythm 40 years and blues gave birth to rock & roll at the end of this decade. He had made his move from Texas to New York in the early 50s and landed a concert Lionel Hampton with the group. This was the same band as Illinois Jacquet played with about 10 years earlier. Thick Jacquet had shaken the world with his sax solo sax screaming back home with the same band.
King Curtis noted the top players Earl Bostic, Louis Jordan, and two colleagues tenors Texas, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb and as a major influence on the saxophone. He had his roots firmly planted in the horns and shouts R Rockin '& B-style sax dominated the gender in the 40s and 50s. But as the '50s progressed, the music has changed and just as King Curtis.
His versatility was on the way of Big Band Swingin 'jazz combos and little Horace Silver through the rock and roll groups like The Coasters and Buddy Holly's soul as Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett. One of the last records, it was made in July 1971 for the album of John Lennon's Imagine. Curtis died later this summer, The August 13.
These are just a handful of King Curtis recorded the album more. From left to right, Live at Fillmore West 's, 1971 – Remains Human remains!, 1962 – The Best of King Curtis, 1962 – Meeting of Alma, Paradise 1960 – Live at Small, 1957
There are about 60 albums King Curtis counting compilations and imports. It was the greatest saxophonist of the application session time and appears in more than 220 albums as sideman!
Here's a short list;
Big Joe Turner – Buddy Holly – Ruth Brown – Delaney & Bonni
Aretha Franklin – Goerge Benson – Sam Cooke – The Rascals
Waylon Jennings – Freddie King – Esther Philips – Nina Simone
Lavern Baker – The Coasters – John Lennon – Eric Clapton
Duane Allman – Roberta Flack Fats Domino – - Otis Redding
Wilson Pickett.
And …
In addition to playing a great sax solo tons of documents produced and arranged many his recordings and the artists. Best of King Curtis is the lyrical phrasing, and beauty of her voice sounded. As a player, inspired in every saxophonist I was interested in blues, R & B, rock & roll, jazz and soul.
Speaking of the soul, it was obviously a big fan of Ray Charles. A large part of the soul and R & B had recorded things that feel to it. Since the release of Curtis One Mint Julep, a song also recorded by Ray Charles.
I do not know if he invented that slapping "sound on cane, but he was the first guy that I knew who has … is a cool effect.
Al Caiola is a guitarist who has been so busy on the scene in the recording studio in New York King Curtis. These guys have done a lot of sessions together and, finally, launched in 1962 a great and fun instrumental called Guitar Boogie. This type of Al Caiola begins with some very good rock and roll and the collection of King Curtis looks like he took the reins this perfect day … listening to guitar with Al Caiola Boogie and King Curtis.
Long live the king!
