What would cause rotten bark on the tree trunk of my black gum tree?
I bought a 15 Gallon, 7′ tall black gum recently. I inspected it at the nursery, but didn’t catch a small area of rotten bark on the main trunk until I got home. Does anyone know what would cause it, and is the tree worth saving? Thank you
UNless I’m mistaken ‘gum trees’ are from the eucalyptus family.
They are notoriously dirty trees, shedding bark and leaves all the year round. So I suspect your young gum tree is just getting in there early and starting a habit which will go on forever..!
When I worked in Gardening, I had lawns that has gum trees on them and I would mow the lawns nicely and by the evening the grass was covered with dropped bark and leaves. It was never ending and I confess, I truly hated those trees and got rid of ‘en whenever I could and replaced them with evergreens of elms or Jacarandas, anything but gum trees..!
