How do I make part of an black & white digital photo colour?
I have a colour image, but I want to change it to black & white whilst leaving some of it in colour. How do I do this using photoshop elements 5?
Using the Erase tool is the ‘clunky’ way to do it and leaves little control as it’s difficult to go back. A better method is to use Layers
1) Open your image
2) Copy the image (Ctrl + J), convert this top image to B&W, there are loads of ways to do this, but for now just desaturate.
Elements 5 doesn’t have layer masks so we have to cheat a little.
3) Select bottom layer and open a Levels Adjustment Layer, don’t do anything with the layer just click OK. This layer is there just to supply the mask.
4) Select a soft brush, and have Black as your foregound colour. Click on the mask (it should get a rectangle around it to show it’s selected).
To recap, you should have a top B&W Layer, a middle layer which provides our mask and your original colour layer on the bottom.
5) Now just paint with Black onto the layer mask, where you paint with black the colour image from underneath will show through.
6) If you make a mistake, change the foreground colour to White and paint on the Mask this will Hide the colour pixels again. – total control.
Zoom in on your image to get the section really accurate when you want to move the image just press and hold the ‘Spacebar’ and left click and drag, you image will follow your mouse.
If you need to resize your brush use the ‘Square Brackets’ keys (those to the right of the letter ‘P’ on a standard keyboard), left square bracket will make your brush smaller, right square bracket will make it larger.
