1) Be Prepared
The last thing you want is to start filling out a job application form and not have all the necessary information to complete it so be prepared. Being prepared includes bringing pens, a copy of your C.V. or resume and all phone numbers. Make sure you read the form and carefully follow the instructions. You should have all the information necessary to complete the job form with you when you start filling it out. If possible get a copy of the form first so that you will have all the necessary information available when you actually fill out the form and submit it to the employer.
2) Never Leave Spaces Blank
Many applicants will leave a field blank. For example someone may prefer to leave the field for requested salary blank because they are afraid they will put down a salary that is more than the position pays. It is a mistake to leave fields blank. Companies can have ranges for salaries and, if you are the perfect candidate, they have plenty of flexibility to set the pay commiserate with your expectations. If a particular question does not apply to you, it is acceptable to put N/A in the blank. Some companies will scan in your job application form and then use a computer program to convert your answers to a score. Leaving a field blank will result in zero points but putting something might generate some points.
3) Do Not Leave Gaps
Do not leave any time gaps in filling out the job application form. Potential employers will not understand why you did not work for 6 months last year and without that knowledge they may set your application aside. It is better to explain gaps in employment or education that to leave the potential employer guessing what might have occurred.
4) Check for Completeness
Once you have completed the job application form, double check everything to make sure that you have filled in every blank. A job form can be convoluted because it is collecting quite a bit of data on you so it is very easy to simply skip over a field without realizing it. If you do a final check then you can make sure you have not forgotten any necessary information.
5) Sign and Date
It is amazing to learn that it is very common for someone to spend time completing a job application form and then forget to sign and date it. For legal reasons some companies require a signed and dated job form before inviting an applicant in for an interview. If you fail to sign the job form then you will never be invited for an interview.
