Blanks Skateboard Decks

Painting a skateboard with oil paint?

Hi, I just bought a blank skateboard deck, and I would like to paint a design on it with oil paint. When I got the board, it has some kind of thin clear coat on it. If I want to use oils, do I need to apply some clear gesso first? And if so, do I need to sand down that clear coat before I apply the gesso?

Thanks!

Scuff up the clear coat but don’t use Gesso, use a Primer. The primer will stick to the board and also allow the paint to stick to it.Then use Acrylic Enamel or Acrylic Lacquer . But do not use oil paint, because it is not meant for that type of painting, and it will not hold up. If you use an acrylic enamel then finish up with a clear coat of acrylic enamel.
But if you decide to use a acrylic lacquer then finish up with a acrylic lacquer clear coat . But do not use lacquer and enamel together. Using a lacquer on top of enamel will ruin the enamel. So be careful not to mix the two types of paint.
