Castors in the Education System
In the United Kingdom there are over twenty thousand primary and secondary schools educating our children. Sixteen percent are secondary schools and the remainder are primary schools. In 2008 the budget spends within our schools totalled fourty three billion pounds. With the budget deficit we face in this country, cuts are being made, and the education sector will be one of many targets. This has an effect on the amount of spend schools can allocate, and replacement furniture, trolleys, cabinets or equipment may have to be scrapped. However this leaves an opportunity for castors manufacturers to replace worn out castors on these units, instead of replacing the whole unit. To coin a phrase the era of ‘recycle and reuse’ is here to stay.
There is such a wide array of equipment that schools utilise that can have replacement castors, instead of repurchasing the whole new unit. Let’s look at the kitchens to begin with. In most primary and secondary schools, weather small village or inner city schools, lunch is either served in mobile catering units on stainless steel castors, or from a dining room and kitchen. Many school kitchens house an array of careering equipment, onto which replacement castors can be attached. Stainless steel castors have the added benefit of being anti corrosive and do not rust when exposed to cleaning agents and water. These stainless steel castors are often required to have rubber wheels, not only to ensure a smooth movement of the trolley or unit, but they are also quiet and non marking.
Many schools, whether primary or secondary have sporting equipment, which is required to be moved and repositioned as required. Often school halls double up as sports halls, especially in bad weather, and this requires the majority of the equipment to be manoeuvrable. Small, often discrete lockable castors on the sports equipment ensures that not only can the piece be relocated, but also can be locked into position for safety.
An added storage solution in many dining halls and sports halls is the folding and stacking tables and chairs. These folded tables, for example are often housed on a wide bed trolley, on castors. This enables the trolley on castors to be wheeled into the hall, and tables erected where required. Similarly stackable chairs are stored on trolleys on castors, again to enable relocation and repositioning. These castors are often specified as rubber swivelling castors, as not only are they strong and can take heavy loads, but are also quiet and non marking.
Classrooms in schools have become more technically advanced overtime. Gone are the blackboards and chalk, to be replaced with high tech white boards. Mobile lap tops are now a necessity in many schools, not only for teachers, but also for students. If for example, the school is not lucky enough to have its own IT suite, many schools opt for a lockable unit to house the laptops, on castors for easy movement in-between classrooms. Along with this many items of furniture, cupboards and units are also on castors to ensure ease of movement when the classrooms are reorganised. With the budget cuts we face over the next few years, many local authorities are looking to save money and replace their existing castors instead of purchasing brand new furniture and equipment.
