Who is going to complete the Wheel of Time?
Now that the original author is dead, who is going to finish the books? is he good at writing? is he a friend of Jordan? will the next book be different then if Jordan was writing it?
Brandon Sanderson, another fantasy author, will be finishing it.
Is he good? Well, I think so. He just finished his own trilogy recently, called the Mistborn trilogy. If you want to see his writing style, you should check out his books. Personally, I really loved them. I’m almost done with the second book, and think he’s a great author.
Is he Jordan’s friend? No. He did, however, grow up a HUGE wot fan, and was devastated to hear Jordan died. Thats partially why he got the job to finish it. He wrote a really nice eulogy on his website and about how much of an influence Jordan was. Robert Jordan’s wife, Harriet, who is also his editor, was selecting someone to finish the series. She saw the Eulogy Sanderson had written, and really loved it, and checked out his other work, and decided he was the best man for it. I think her picking the person to finish it is as good as Jordan picking the next person, because she was not only his wife, but also his editor, so she knows him personally as well as how he writes.
Is it going to be different? Of course. No one could compare to Jordan’s writing. But it will be close. For one thing, RJ wrote a lot of the book. The very important parts, like the end, he wrote out fully. Other parts, he left bits written and extensive notes. For another thing, Sanderson is a huge fan of his work, and so is very familiar with RJ’s writing style. And finally, it will all be proofed by Harriet and RJ’s publishers (TOR…the guy who is doing that was also a good friend of RJ) so they will make sure it is as close as possible.
All in all, I’m very hopeful about the last book. It isn’t going to be the same as if RJ wrote it, but they are trying very had to make it as good as possible.
Sanderson is working on the first draft right now, and they are hoping for a late 2009/early 2010 release. If you want to keep up, Sanderson keeps a blog where he talks about WOT and his other works. He has a nice word count there that keeps you updated. The site is http://www.brandonsanderson.com
