This can result in serious injuries such as concussions, brain damage and even death.
So when you are looking for a helmet, you will want to be sure it meets the ASTM F1492 skateboard helmet standard. The helmet will contain foam on the inside that cushions your head on impacts. It will also contain a strong outer shell that can resist multiple impacts. The best helmets will use expanded polypropylene and a strong and sturdy strap to hold the helmet on your head.
You will also need a good set of elbow and knee pads, as your joints can take a pounding every time you take a spill. Don’t go cheap here and be sure to talk to an expert at your local skate shop about the best pads you can buy. You will also want to buy specialized skateboard clothing that contains extra padding that helps to reduce abrasions and will reduce the amount of skin burns you get with every fall.
Another big consideration is the type of shoes you wear when skateboarding. There are many skateboard shoes on the market, but not all of them are high quality shoes. You will want to get a pair of shoes that allow for both freedom of movement and maximum grip on your board. Remember, style is great when you are walking, but not important when you are on your board.
Buying the proper equipment to keep yourself safe while skateboarding isn’t an option, it is a must. It isn’t cool to skate naked because you think your boarding skills won’t get you hurt. Be smart and keep yourself protected.
