What do i do after taking out the old speakers of my 89 THunderbird, the hook ups dont fit the new pioneers..?
I bought 4 new 6×8 pioneer speakers for my 89 thunderbird and i was gonna have them installed professionally but they wanted to charge me double the price of the speakers. So i decided to try to hook them up myself w/ a little help from some friends and online. I have the two front door speakers taken out but the hook up to the old 6×8’s dont match up to the new pioneer 6×8’s…does anyone know if i have to buy an adapter or something or cut the wires(i dont think that would work to good)…any input would be helpful, thanks.

“If they blow, you got the leads wrong. Go buy more speakers and switch the leads!” is wrong!!
They won’t blow, they will have some sound canceling qualities though.
To figure polarity of the wires, unhook the stock speaker from the stock wires. Temporarily hook up a AA (1.5 volt) battery to the speaker, if it pushes out, take note which terminal is hooked to the positive of the battery. This is the where the positive wire from the head unit connects. If the speaker doesn’t push out but sucks in, then take note which terminal is hooked to the negative of the battery as this will be the positive wire from the head unit connects.
Cutting the plugs off of the old speakers can work (sometimes) or it’s best to get crimp on wire taps (leaving the original speakers plugs in tact so you can replace the stock speakers when you sell the car). The crimp on taps are removeable too.

From the crimp on wire taps run 16 AWG wire and solder to the new speakers.
