What are Adjustable Inline Skates
Before I get into this article, let me preface by saying up front that I am not a parent…at least to the best of my knowledge I’m not, and it may seem a bit out of left field that someone who isn’t a parent would be writing an article on adjustable inline skates. But I am an experienced skater and I have many friends who now have young children that are reaching the age where they are beginning to skate. So hopefull with my knowledge and experience via my friends, you will find some useful information if you too are a parent interested in getting your kid(s) into the wonderful sport of inline skating.
What are Adjustable Inline Skates?
The first topic I will address is simply, what are adjustable inline skates. Well they are pretty much what their name implies, skates that can be adjusted. I’m sure you’re thinking, “thanks for that rivoting piece of information!” Well to be more specific, adjustable inline skates are adjustable in size, meaning they can expand or retract in size depending on the foot size of its user. This sizing adjustment feature is most prominent on skates for younger children, with most skates adjusting in ranges of 3, 4, or even 5 full sizes.
For you parents out there, this is where a smile should be coming across your face. Why you ask? Well for anyone out there who was fortunate enough to skate as a child, you know that this feature wasn’t available on skates that your parents bought for you. If you hit a growth spurt and your feet grew 2 sizes in a summer, your parents would’ve needed to get you 2 new pairs of rollerblades to accomadate your large feet. Unless of course they bought your skates a bit larger to allow for some growth, but even then, 2 full sizes would’ve made skating nearly impossible…and at the very least extremely painful. But because of adjustable inline skates, those issues are gone, which means less hassle and most importantly, LESS MONEY spent on skates.
Basically if you have a 6 year old son or daughter with a size 11 or 12 kids shoe, you can get them a pair of skates that range from 11 all the way of to size 1 (just as an example) and not have to worry about buying 3 or 4 pairs of skates as their feet grow. Think of the money you will save! If that doesn’t make you smile, then I don’t know what will.
How Do Adjustable Inline Skates Work?
So you know what adjustable inline skates are, you know the benefit to you and the benefit they’ll have on your wallet. Now you’re wonder, how does it work? Is it difficult to adjust? Is it time consuming? The answer to the latter question is simple, no it’s not time consuming at all. And while the manner of how the skates adjust may vary from one brand to the next, the idea is constant and simple. Give you a quick, simple, and easy way to adjust the size of the skate to the user.
As it pertains to the first question about how it works, the image below highlights the area where the skate would be unlocked (yellow rectangle). Once unlocked, the front section, highlighted by the yellow arrow, will slide forward or backward depending on whether you’d like to make the skate larger or smaller. Sizes will usually range 3 or 4 full sizes, and sometimes even up to 5 full sizes. Common ranges are 11-1, 1-4, and 4-7 (big kids). This extends the useful life of the skates greatly, and if the skates are well taken care of, they can even be passed down to a younger sibling to further extend the life and stretch those dollars spent. Just be sure you’re not asking your young son to rock some frilly pink and purple skates, he’ll never live that down.
