The grandson of Alabama slaves, Powell Clearview Golf Club created after returning home from World War II. While serving in Europe, received the rank of technical sergeant in the U.S. Eighth Air Force battalion trucks.
Powell spent 18 hours a day to keep your family and build Clearview. Refused a loan GI, met with the funding of two African American physicians, and his brother took out a second mortgage on your home.He spent carving of farmland Clearview former dairy in 1946, clearing the way for their use. In the process, Powell broke racial barriers, without fanfare through the development of women's golf leagues and youth
Clearview opened its first nine holes in 1948. Powell eventually returned to their benefactors to obtain full ownership, and another nine holes were completed in 1978, and most golfers know most of this club and take your golf course equipment. Clearview is on the National Register of Historic Places and nicknamed "Course of the United States." Powell said he built this course for any survey. Golf is a part of society and just wanted to be included. Nobody said he wants fans to the sport to be included as well. Each individual should make some sense. It feels good knowing I've done that with Clearview for end.
Powell was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in 1996 and became the PGA Life Member in 1999. Powell also received Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from his alma mater, Wilberforce University, and Baldwin-Wallace College. He also played a role in The First T, which has distributed more than 1,100 William J. Powell scholarships that enable young people to attend the first shirt Life Skills and Leadership Academies conducted on college campuses.
Powell was preceded in death of wife Marcela and their son William. Besides his daughter Renee, who survived by son Larry, who has served more than 30 years as superintendent at Clearview Golf Club, and two sisters, Rose Mary Alice Walker and Mary Mathews. Clearview: America course was now considered a work of love. Let a nod to this pioneer of big black golf.
