TIS: Is it excessively annoying when asked about leaving law school for comedy over, and over, and over again?
DM:I don’t like being asked the same question so many times, but I don’t mind it that much if it helps me get people to come to my shows.
TIS: In the beginning of your Person.comedy special, you mention you are skateboarder. Can you tell me what kind of boards you ride/rode and what skaters influenced you?
DM:I’ve had many different boards over the years. I had a lot of Powell & Peralta boards (Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Per Wielander, Lance Mountain models) and Vision ones too (various Mark Gonzales decks). I had a couple of freestyle boards when they used to make those (Rodney Mullen deck, etc.). More recently, I’ve been skating long boards. I was influenced by Rodney Mullen, Mark Gonzales, Neil Blender and the Bones Brigade.
TIS: You’re obviously an important and interesting man. In your words, what do you attribute said importance and interest too?
DM:My ability to answer a question in which I am being subtly mocked. *NOTE: I am a big fan of Demetri’s and meant this question to be playful. Since the interview was Q&A via email, I’m not exactly sure how he took it.
TIS: Who’s making you laugh currently?
DM:Anyone who falls down but doesn’t get hurt too badly.
TIS: Who’s not making you laugh currently?
DM:Sick people.
TIS: You’re quite the multi-talented musician. What inspired you to take up the particular instruments you play (Piano, Guitar, Harmonica, etc) and are you self taught?
DM: I started playing music because I wanted to score a one-man show that I wrote. I am self-taught. I’m trying to learn how to play better. I don’t know that many chords.
TIS: Who is Demetri Martin Rock and/or Rolling to these days?
DM:Those in need.
TIS: Have you worked with anyone who has made it difficult for you to keep a straight face while filming?
DM: Jon Benjamin made me laugh a lot of times when we were filming Important Things.
TIS: Your father was a Greek Orthodox Priest. How was that growing up, and do you think it skewed your perception of religion/spirituality at all?
DM:It was great. I feel lucky that he was my dad. I don’t know if it skewed my perception of religion or spirituality. I don’t think it did.
TIS: Can you tell me something completely random about yourself that most people don’t know?
DM:Sure.
