While a good horse racing system can help you with your handicapping and help you to find good bets, if you want to make a living as a horse racing handicapper, you will need to use your own skills and personality. When I say skills and personality, I mean that you have a unique way of looking at things that no one else has and it can help you to see a race as no one else does. People who make a living betting on horse races do it by developing their own methods.
Some pros who profit from betting on horse races are contrarians. Betting against the crowd or conventional wisdom is one way to go, but it takes a lot of nerve and self confidence. Others who bet on horse races for a living do it by handicapping the crowd and looking for weakness in their judgment, for instance, finding a favorite that has some serious flaws that make it a very risky choice for a favorite. Once again, though, they win by betting against the crowd’s choice.
Are you starting to see what I mean by developing their own way? Betting with the crowd is a recipe for disaster. Yes you will cash wining tickets, but betting on favorites or even other contenders that are over bet, will only eat away at your bankroll. Anyone can go to a race track and pick a few winners, if by no other means than to simply bet the favorite in every race on the card. To make a profit from your bets, however, you’ll need to know what a bet is worth.
That is how pros bet. They follow the horses and know when a trainer has his or her horse sharp and ready to win. Then they follow the money and treat the bet as an investment. They use their own experience to know what a fair price is on a horse. If they don’t get the odds they want, they pass the race, even though he or she has spent considerable time and effort tracking the horse.
So if you want to bet like a pro on horse races, start tracking individual horses and play them in the right spots only when you get a fair price. Keep notes so you will eventually learn what a fair price is and start showing a profit. You will have to sit out a lot of races because betting on every race, or even a lot of races, is not how the pros win.
The most consistent horse racing systems have to have the basics and a handicapper must understand the basics. I have been around horse racing for 50 years including as an owner.
