The wine regions of Austria are divided into four areas, called Lower Austria, Styria, Burgenland and Vienna. Each of these regions are then divided, for a total of 19 designated areas for viticulture. For more or less directed, Lower Austria comprises the wine growing areas north and west of Vienna, with Burgenland south and east of Vienna and south west of Styria and Burgenland.
Lower Austria, called "Niederosterriech" is divided into 8 sub-regions: Wachau, Kremstal, Kamptal Danubelands, Traisental, Carnuntum, Weinvertel and Thermenregion. Call this region "Lower Austria" can be confusing. As mentioned above, four major wine regions of Austria are in the vicinity of Vienna, and so are all in the eastern half of the country. Of the four, Lower Austria is the most North. Geographically, one might think of the area to the north as "superior", not "low." In this case, is called "Bottom" latitude due to its low altitude, no. Burgenland, however, the arguments of the lower altitudes of the four regions, but nevertheless, this is the highest, the region further north is called Lower Austria.
The Wachau region, although not the largest region (whose claim to fame belongs to Weinvertel) is perhaps the best known of the 8 sub-regions. There are 3,500 hectares of vineyards, mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the steeply terraced vineyards planted on the river Danube. The area also grows Sauvignon Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger, Gelber Muskateller, and Chardonnay (often called "Feinburgunder"). There is an association called regional "Wachau Nobilis Vinea Districtus" the labels of wines under three classifications: Steinfeder (light, young and democracy), Federspiel (elegant and medium-bodied), and Smaragd (complex, mature and powerful.) Some of the most famous wineries of this partnership include Alzingen, Donabaum (Johann), Mauritiushof Gritsch, Högl, Knoll, Pichler and Prager.
Kremstal and Kamptal produce wines that are equal in quality to those of the Wachau, which is not surprising since Kremstal western geologically is identical to its better known neighbor. Then, in the region there is this huge rock Kamptal called Hell Rock, around that the old-vine Riesling wines wonderful performance. The most famous wine regions from these two wineries Nigl, Gobelsburg Schloss, Brundylmayer, and Marion Jurtschitsch Ebner Melusina.
Weinviertel means "wine quarter, and is so called because it is the largest wine producing area in all of Austria (45,000 acres). The room grew to encompass the Danubelands, Traisental and Carnuntum. Has a different terroir as they move across borders where the climate in southeastern European Pannonia (thick loess layers, as well as lime, silicates, and clay) to the northern border with the Czech Republic (where they grow red wines), west to the southern edge of the Danubelands (A relatively "new" wine-growing area) and east to Carnuntum (thick loess over, but the gravel deposits and small areas of the Danube for ex.) Grüner Veltliner is a specialty here, where the aroma is different from those in the Wachau, Kremstal or Kamptal regions.
Thermenregion means "thermal region, named for the volcanic fault line that crosses and public spas have. The conditions here are comparable to those of the Cote d'Or, with a mild climate and heavy, rocky soils of limestone and clay to produce intense white wines and full-bodied reds. They have had right to sell wine since the 13th century here, and the main varieties are Neuburger and Pinot Blanc, with the most famous wine-growers from Gumpoldskirchen.
