Santa Cruz Church, the Church of the Holy Cross, was first built
the reign of King Taksin, a legacy of Thai-Portuguese relations
going back to 16 century.
Surrounded by old houses along the river and new
inside buildings, the red dome of the old Catholic church
is a prominent landmark on the Chao Phraya.
Descendants of early Portuguese traders built the first
Church of Santa Cruz in 1770 after the fall Ayutthaya. The
Portuguese, the first Europeans in Thailand, arrived
Ayutthaya shortly after they captured Malacca in 1511.
As the area was also claimed by the King of Thailand, the Portuguese
knowingly sent an envoy to the court of Ayutthaya in
year to reassure the Thai Portuguese intentions.
In 1516, Portugal signed a treaty with Thailand to supply
firearms and ammunition. The treaty includes the rights
residence, commerce and practice their religion in Thailand. This
brought the first Portuguese friars in 1567 that established the
Catholic Church in Ayutthaya.
After the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767, the Portuguese
continued their military support to King Taksin in
efforts to oust the Burmese Thailand. Supply
cannons and muskets contributed significantly to the King Taksin of
army.
In recognition of his services, King Taksin grant
Portuguese a plot of land to build a wooden church in an area
called Kudi Jeen. Therefore, the church is sometimes called Wat
Kudi Jeen.
Over the next 65 years, the wooden church in Kudi Jeen fell
in a state of disrepair. In 1835, Cardinal rebuilt Pallegoix and
name of the Church, Church of Santa Cruz means Holy Cross
English Church.
The present Church of Santa Cruz was rebuilt again in 1913 and
This structure has remained ever since.
The door to the large patio is within walking distance
Santa Cruz Wharf in the Chao Phraya. A crucifix is a
corner of the courtyard and a statue of Mary in a beautiful
garden on the other.
Within a smaller courtyard, surrounded by a low level wrought iron
nearby is the church of light cream color trimmed in
reddish brown and covered by a domed bell tower. Flanks
the church are decorated with stained glass etched with biblical
images.
The church and the courtyard is closed on weekdays.
To the rear of the church, away from the Chao Phraya, there
a small cemetery with nine tombs encased in marble.
The church grounds well kept are quiet during the week except
rhythmic strains of children reciting their lessons in
Santa Cruz, near Convent and the pedestrian occasionally in the
way to the dock.
Like an urban oasis you are close (lanes) leading to
streets outside the Church of Santa Cruz all that remains
of the Portuguese influence in today Kudi Jeen.
