I think you're attaching more meaning to what Fairey necessarily justify or want. Fairey graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in illustration. What you do think he has "sold" from? He makes art for sale. Most racing art to do that, you know … Obey was a design that created that captured the public interest, and became a currency risk-taking for him. Never was intended to have a deeper meaning esoteric or philosophical … Read a little biography of Fairey, and you will quickly see that there is "selling out "For its part, because he never claimed to be something mystical to sell out.
