Maybe you have been surfing for a few years or just started and you want to get your own surf board. You look around the beach, hire a few different boards and realize that the more you look the more complex it gets. With so many surf boards to choose from, what should someone chose.

Well the simple answer is the one that is right for you. Now you are not going to find this out without years of surfing and trying at least 50 different boards. You will still have to do some surfing and try a range of boards but this article will give you a kick start as to where to start.

Beginner Surfers

Now most people new to surfing, including the author of this article, rushes ahead and tries to get too good too soon.

After standing up a few times, we start to think how easy it is and immediately change boards to a more challenging surf board. We recommend any newbie to surfing, meaning anyone who has surfed less than 50-75 times to stick with a Malibu. It is really important to get competent in all types of waves with this type of board first. If you are finding it to easy, focus on the wave and entry point. Improve other areas of your surfing like understanding the movement of the wave and how a wave forms. We suggest any board that is at least 2ft bigger than you and ideally minimum 21 inch wide. Have fun and enjoy your surfing, do not try to get too good too soon you will only bite yourself in the foot.

Long Board

Long boards are not necessarily for beginners. Infact they are for intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle the big size and want a fun and easy board for small waves.

Mini Mal / Malibu

This is the ideal board for beginners and progression. Mini mals are small enough to carry around and not be an annoyance in the water and big enough to stand up easily. A good Malibu will last for a long time. These are the original surf boards that surfers who started the sport centuries ago used to use.

Short Board

These boards are for the advanced surfers. They are small and delicate. Short boards are designed to turn quickly and move fast around the waves. They are very difficult to stand up on and need a lot of balance to use. These boards come in an array of sizes and are relative to the size and weight of the person using it. The shape of each board also changes depending on what the surfer desires. You can have square, flat, swallow tailed and rounded back ends, all make the board move slightly different in the water. None are better than another, they are simply different.

Phish Board

Essentially this is a cross between a long board and a short board. Made for small waves with big volume and a wide platform but short in size and shaped to make the wave believe it is a short board. The short size allows users to move and turn the board with greater ease.
