SkateAmerica: Do-It-Yourself Skateboard Wax
Those stoppages refer to the rough surfaces and indentations on the skateboarding trail. SkateAmerica, the leading action sports mail order company, recommends the use of a skateboard wax.
Rough surfaces or indentations on board slides and grinds prevent a skateboarder from perfecting a smooth glide. Skateboard wax helps in filling out these indentations. It smooths the surface which gives you a solid ground. Skateboard waxes are very cheap. Prices range from $3 to 7. However, if you really want be thrifty and save money, you can actually make your own skateboard wax. Here’s how:
First, you need to gather all the materials needed. In making your own skateboard wax, you’re going to need:
- A candle / or crayon – This will serve as your base. You don’t have to buy a new candle. Any used ones or even leftovers will do. You can also used colored candles to add fun. If you don’t have a candle, you can use crayon instead.
- Olive oil – You can also use other types of oil.
- Dishwashing soap – To make it more slippery. But this is optional.
- An empty can – This will serve as your molder. If you want, you can try using cookie molders or other containers.
Now that you have everything you need, let’s get started. First thing you want to do is to slice of break the candle or crayon into very small portions; the smaller the pieces, the easier to melt.
On the can or molder, put in the candle or crayon pieces. Pour enough amount of olive oil into the container. Do not put too much or the product would not hold together. Do not put too little amount too because it would not be slippery enough.
Mix in an adequate volume of liquid dishwashing soap to increase its effectiveness.
Place the contained in an oven until the mixture melts. Make sure you do not leave it for a long time. Open the oven from time to time to stir the mixture, otherwise, the oil and liquid dishwashing soap will sink into the bottom.
When the mixture is all melted, remove it from the oven and leave it to cool. You can leave it on a window but make sure to put a sign about what it is. Kids might play with it or adults might throw it out.
Once it’s cool, place it inside the refrigerator for a few hours. Check if it is hard enough by poking it with your finger or a toothpick. Remove the wax from its container by heating the sides of it to melt the wax edges. You can also just cut the whole container.
