jumps with a horizontal speed of 4.30 m/s
onto a stationary skateboard. The student
and skateboard move down the sidewalk with
a speed of 4.12 m/s.
a) Find the mass of the skateboard.
Answer in units of kg.
b) How fast would the student have to jump
to have a final speed of 6.36 m/s?

a) So lets use convervation of momentum to solve this problem.
BUT lets start by listing the given’s, since every problem looks intimidating until you list out them…
Student = m_1 = 46.1kg
Student = v_1= 4.3 m/s
Skateboard = m_2 = ???
Skateboard = v_2 = 0
Resultant speed = v_f = 4.12 m/s
Now that we have the givens down, we can look at the problem itself. It considers a student that jumps ON a skateboard, so this is a collisions problem.
Inelastic collision formular = (m_1)(v_1) + (m_2)(v_2) = (m_1 + m_2)(v_f)
so using what information I just gave you,

Since we now have the masses of both the student and skateboard, we can solve for the required speed of the student.
Again, we list out the givens.
Student = m_1 = 46.1kg
Student = v_1 = ?
Skateboard = m_2 = You solved for this in the last question
Skateboard = v_2 = 0, since it is stationary.
Resultant Speed = v_f = 6.36 m/s
Now that the scary part is done, we use the same formular to solve the rest of the problem.
