I have a vinyl banner that I want to have turned into a bag. How can I do this?
I have a 6ftx4ft vinyl banner that I wanted to have turn into some sort of bag. Instead of throwing the banner out, I want to recycle it. Does anyone know of any vendors?
What kind of bag do you want? Handbag? Tote? Or a storage bag for stuff you’ll put in the basement or garage?
Regardless – if you know what you want it to look like, sketch your design on paper, and add in details like straps, clasp, zipper, etc. Look around for sources of the hardware – zippers, clasps, straps, handles, etc, as well as anything needed to attach straps, if you don’t wan them sewn on. Figure out how you want to cut the banner if you need to, and how you want the lettering on the banner to appear on the bag. Refine the drawing until it’s decently clear, and you can show it to someone who can understand what you want with only minimal explanation from you.
Then take the drawing and the banner to a shoe repair shop. They generally have sewing equipment that can handle heavy fabric, leather, etc. If they aren’t busy, they will probably be happy to work with you. I’ve used different shops like this for repair of sporting goods, and had good luck. They will charge you for their time, but it probably won’t be anything exorbitant, unless you have an intricate design. You can always ask about the fee before you hand everything over, of course.
And if you can’t find a shoe repair shop, try a sailmaker’s shop, if you’re near the ocean, or an awning repair shop. Or look in the Yellow Pages for Awning repair, canvas repair, etc.
