Getting To Know Your Skateboard
We’d all love to just pick up a skateboard, ride it all we want, and not meddle with the technical stuff that goes with it. But skateboarding is a gear-intensive sport. As such, things break down and need to be replaced at one point or another. Because of this, it’s important that you try to get to know your skateboard pretty well. It surely makes looking for parts and talking to the people at your skateboarding shop a lot easier.
Aside from that, understanding how your skateboard works makes it easier for you to know which parts to upgrade once your skills have outgrown your current set up. For example, if you want more control over your board, you’ll probably want lower trucks and/or smaller wheels. See what we’re getting at here?
To get to know your skateboard better, we’ll show you the most essential parts of the skateboard you need to be familiar with.
1. Deck. The deck is the wooden platform of your skateboard. It’s usually oval-shaped, and comes in a variety of widths and lengths. The width and length of your particular deck depends on your height and the size of your feet.
Decks come in different designs. If you want your skateboard to stand out, the design of your deck should be one of your primary considerations.
Wooden decks are still the popular choice among skateboarders despite the fact that decks made of different materials have recently cropped up.
2. Trucks. Trucks are the metal parts that are attached to your deck. Your skateboard wheels and bearings are, then, screwed onto the trucks. As with the deck, trucks come in a variety of heights and widths. Bushings in the trucks are also important as they dictate how much control you can have over the way your board turns.
3. Skateboarding Wheels. Starting out with steel and clay wheels in the past, skateboarding wheels have evolved into the strong urethane wheels of today. Skateboarding wheels vary in height and hardness. Just like other parts of your skateboard, the particular type of wheel you need depends on the type of skateboarding that you do.
What’s important in choosing skateboarding wheels is buying from really reliable brands that have been tested by pros. These wheels provide you with the assurance that you’re getting the most out of your wheels, with lesser chances of flat spotting.
4. Bearings. Want a smooth and comfortable ride on your skateboard? Then get bearings that create a balance between smoothness and durability. Bearings may not look important in the overall picture, but good bearings do provide you with a boost in performance and safety.
5. Risers. Risers are optional parts that you slap onto your trucks. They do a couple of things. First, they minimize the stress on your deck when landing. Second, they prevent wheel bite. Minimized stress on your deck means your deck won’t crack easily. Meanwhile, wheel bite is a bane to skateboarders that you want to avoid if you’re using large wheels with low trucks. Wheel bites could cause your wheels to suddenly stop and throw you out of your board—not something that you want to happen.
There are of course other parts you need to be familiar with when getting to know your skateboard better, such as the optional grip tape, etc. However, the ones we’ve mentioned above are the most important parts that you’ll likely deal with often as you go on skateboarding.
