If you keep Aquarium Fish that like to eat live food then here’s a good source of food you may not have thought of before, a worm farm. I bought a worm farm a few years ago to turn organic kitchen waste in plant fertilizer for my garden. In recent times though, I’ve found that my worm farm has now become an important source of free food for my fish as well.
So first of all the obvious choice of fish food from your worm farm are compost worms. What you may not know though, is that worm farms have a way of attracting other welcome visitors as well. White Worms are also a favourite food of many aquarium fish and during the cooler months they will self populate in a worm farm and are also very easy to harvest.
The white worms will crawl the inside walls of the worm farm and can be easily harvested with tweezers and placed in a cup of aquarium water to be rinsed before being fed to your fish. They can also be fed to larger fish fry as well and if you have smaller fry they can be cut to size easily with scissors. Just swish the white worms around in the water and you will find they will cling together in large clumps. Simply lift the clump of white worms out of the water with some tweezers and then cut through it several times with some sharp scissors.
You will find that you can easily turn a clump of 20 or 30 white worms into over 100 smaller, wriggling bite size portions within seconds. Then just feed them to your fry and watch them go crazy over them. Fry absolutely love them and in most cases you’ll find they’ll be devoured well before they reach the bottom of the tank.
A word of warning though, white worms don’t like hot conditions so when the weather warms up during the warmer months, simply harvest some and culture them in a small container. Just ensure your container is kept in a cool place below 20 deg C (68 deg F) and they will survive so you can harvest them at will.
Next up the obvious choice of food from your worm farm are the composting worms. The problem with composting worms though, is they are full of compost when you harvest them from your worm farm. You’ll notice they are slightly translucent and the line of compost inside their body can easily be seen. This can be overcome by placing them in a cup of aquarium water for a few days and what you will find is they’ll excrete the waste from their body and you’ll see the line of compost will disappear and be replaced by worm waste on the bottom of the cup.
Therefore when they are clear of compost you can remove them and rinse them in clean water before feeding to your fish. For smaller fish, composting worms can also be easily chopped to bite size pieces for ease of feeding. You’ll also find these types of live food can not only be used a supplement your fish’s regular diet or when conditioning fish for breeding but also as a source of food if you’re away for a few days. Both composting worms and white worms will live submerged in water for several days so your fish can then have a constant supply of food.
So if you’ve only ever considered a worm farm for the obvious benefits it can have for your garden, then think again, as now you can see a worm farm can also be a good source of live food for your aquarium fish as well.
